I've seen some boletes in the oakland hills, found three porcini in Marin, seen some amanita pantherina, friend found some amanita laneii in contra costa.
where are you looking, what are you finding???

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Sun, November 28, 2004 - 5:46 PMFound about 20lbs of Amanita Calyptrata (Cocorra, Cocolli) in Tilden yesterday, found some orange chantrelles in the same patch. In GG park today I found a few boletes and some pine spikes. -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Sun, November 28, 2004 - 8:24 PMBTW if anyone in the SF area wants some Cocorra's for free, I've got more than I could possibly eat. I'll even hook you up with some Cocorra gravy.

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 30, 2004 - 10:53 AMLast Saturday I found Amanita coccora sp of yellow orange, orange brown and olive brown varieties, more than I could carry so I focused on the eggs and they stay freshers longer in my fridge and I think they taste better before they mature and open. The hills above Berkeley are definetly busting out in those and in deadly Amanita phalloides which I heard had already killed someone from Oakland. I found a nice phat flush of Butter boletes and most of them were maggot free. Sliced up and dried I think they taste better than B. edulis. Found a few Orange chantrelles along my hike, most of em were just forming, too puny to bother with ( yet ). Came across a few other sp. of Boletes which I'm saving for the fair. I took my camera and got some good shots of these and a white coral fungi.
I'm gonna see what is out today... -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 30, 2004 - 1:36 PMOlive brown amanitas ARE amanita phalloides!!!! BEWARE!!! Always make sure they're distinctly orange, NEVER just brown or even the slightest bit green!!!

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 30, 2004 - 1:53 PMI'm impressed if you can tell an A. Phalloides "egg" from an A. Coccora 'egg' (which I believe is now named Amanita Lanei - www.mykoweb.com/) -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 30, 2004 - 2:02 PMThey are distinguishable even in egg form if the cap has a orange color to it (just avoid paler varieties found later in the winter). Additionally if you're going to be serious about regularly eating this mushroom from NEW patches, you should invest in a microscope an observe the spores.

Tue, November 30, 2004 - 8:35 PMHello George:
I clicked on the site you have provided and the URL was not found. When I reviewed your thread, I noticed that you have accidentally mis spelled www:mykoweb.com
You spelled it with a slash after the word com. Not to worry, I make typographical errors from time to time also.
I needed to point this out so that others may have access to this good site. Thank you for your thoughts at any rate.

Tue, November 30, 2004 - 2:53 PMI'm dying to try honeys - haven't found them yet, though my friends keep taking me to spots where they say they pop for certain.... -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 30, 2004 - 3:20 PMWith the cold weather and that recent drizzle they should just be popping right now. Take a look in the Santa Cruz Mountains. -

Wed, December 1, 2004 - 6:58 AMThat would be - IF - I even had daylight hours to do this. I work a full time job M-F, and S-S I have massage workshops. I won't be able to do this until January. :( -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Tue, November 15, 2005 - 1:09 AMQuite a good weekend in Mendo, actually. They're starting to pop! I guess sometimes the earlybird does get the worm (or the mushroom without the worm, as the case may be). So far king and manzanita boletes. white and gold chanterelles (this seems to be a good year for the golds, unlike last yr.), pig's ears, grisettes and sweetbread mushrooms. Saw alot of Lacterius deliciousus and Suillus sp. but I usually leave them alone unless that's all I see. I also got one of the biggest hedgehogs I've seen (this is usually pretty early for hedgehogs around here, too). Over 5 inches across! I'll try to post a pic in the next week. -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Fri, November 25, 2005 - 11:00 PMOther edibles I've seen this year are pine spike, oyster mushroom, rosy Gomphidius, Laccaria laccata, butter boletes, Lacterius rubrilacteus (AKA L. sanguifluus), , Leccinums, deer mushrooms, matsutakes, honey mushrooms, shrimp russulas, coccoras, wine colored agarics and a beefsteak fungus. I've posted pics of many of these on the mycology tribe.
I'm putting up the giant hedgehog on here now. -

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Sat, November 26, 2005 - 8:48 AMI found Hericium erinaceus, Oyster mushrooms and Chicken of the Woods in Marine a few days ago. It just rained so I bet there is even more going on this week. -
-
Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Sat, November 26, 2005 - 1:25 PMHericium and Chicken of the woods are a couple of my faves but I usually only find them once a yr. or so (both on wood). Last yr. I spotted a small Griffola growing on a trunk, which was quite suprising, though (it's more of an E. Coast fungi).

Re: What are you finding in the SF Bay Area
Sun, November 27, 2005 - 3:05 PMI was really depressed to go check one of my Lepiota patches and find that it was totally destroyed by Joggers with dogs. The city installed a container which holds plastic bags for people who walk their dogs about 10 feet from the patch. This has encouraged WAY more people to walk their dogs in a circle around that spot but NOT encouraged them to actually pick up the feces.. No more beautiful cypress duff :(
(Oh yeah this is on the west end of Stern Grove in SF) -
